U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, who has represented Texas’s 28th congressional district through multiple election cycles, recently addressed the impact of federal grant withholding on Hispanic Serving Institutions in Texas and shared a personal moment during a visit to New Braunfels.
On September 24, 2025, Cuellar posted about his day at the LBJ School’s Patman Center and a subsequent stop at a popular Texas convenience store: “After my speech this morning at the LBJ School’s Patman Center, I made a quick pit stop for a snack at Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels, TX. Great food!”
The following day, Cuellar commented on recent actions by the U.S. Department of Education regarding funding for higher education programs serving Hispanic students: “The @usedgov’s withholding of nearly 60 million dollars in federal grants for Hispanic Serving Institutions in Texas is a direct blow to students who rely on these programs to access and complete their education. Colleges across our state, including many in South Texas, rely on” (September 25, 2025). Henry Cuellar has maintained his seat in Congress through several election cycles. In 2024, he won re-election against Jay Furman with approximately 52.8% of the vote. His previous victories include defeating Cassy Garcia in 2022 with over 56% of votes and winning against Sandra Whitten in 2020 with more than 58%. These results underscore his longstanding presence as an elected official representing South Texas communities.
