Rep. Henry Cuellar, U.S. Representative for Texas’s 28th congressional district, addressed several topics of local and national importance in a series of social media posts this week.
On August 14, 2025, Rep. Cuellar marked the anniversary of a key piece of American legislation, stating: “90 years ago, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, creating an essential American promise that provides retirement, disability, and survivors benefits to millions of Americans. Today, over 135,000 people in #TX28 depend on Social Security to help pay their” (posted August 14).
Later that day, he highlighted community engagement efforts by his office at a health-focused event in Laredo: “Today, my Outreach Coordinator, Melissa Peña, joined @cityoflaredo Mayor Victor Treviño, Councilwoman Melissa Cigarroa, and community members at the Breastfeeding Awareness Fair hosted by Doctors Hospital. Mayor Treviño read a proclamation recognizing Breastfeeding Awareness” (posted August 14).
On August 15, Rep. Cuellar commented on economic pressures facing families and businesses as a result of trade policies: “Report after report has come out this week coming to the same conclusion – families and businesses are struggling to keep up with retaliatory tariffs. With many companies no longer able to shield consumers from rising import costs, families are now forced to bear the costs.”
Rep. Cuellar has held his seat since first being elected in 2004 and has consistently won re-election in subsequent cycles. Most recently in 2024 he defeated Jay Furman with 52.8% of the vote; previous victories include wins over Cassy Garcia (2022), Sandra Whitten (2020), Arthur Thomas (2018), Zeffen Hardin (2016), and Will Alkens (2014). These results underscore his longstanding representation of Texas’s 28th district.
