Representative Henry Cuellar, who has represented South Texas in Congress through several election cycles, announced on August 6, 2025, the allocation of significant funding for workforce care and suicide prevention in this year’s Homeland Security appropriations bill.
In a post dated August 6, 2025, Cuellar stated: “I’m excited to share another important win for South Texas in this year’s Homeland Security appropriations bill. I helped secure $84 million for workforce care and suicide prevention. This funding is vital because it supports the mental health and wellbeing of the men and women https://t.co/qrPaXYwiap”.
Later that evening, Cuellar expressed condolences regarding a prominent state official. In a tweet posted at 22:31 UTC on August 6, he wrote: “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Texas Transportation Commission Chairman Bruce Bugg. His vision and dedication to improving our state’s transportation system helped move Texas forward, making our roads safer, expanding access, and strengthening critical infrastructure.”

Henry Cuellar has maintained his seat in Congress over multiple election cycles. In the most recent contest in 2024, he defeated Jay Furman with 52.8% of the vote to Furman’s 47.2%. Previous victories include wins over Cassy Garcia in 2022 (56.65% to 43.35%), Sandra Whitten in 2020 (58.3% to 39%), Arthur Thomas in 2018 (84.4% to 15.6%), Zeffen Hardin in 2016 (66.2% to 31.3%), and Will Alkens in 2014 (82.1% to 13.3%).
