Rep. Henry Cuellar, a longtime U.S. Congressman representing Texas’s 28th district, highlighted recent national crime statistics and local community events in a series of posts on August 22, 2025.

In his first post, Cuellar referenced the latest federal data: “National crime statistics confirm what South Texans have long known: our border communities are among the safest in the country. The 2024 Uniform Crime Report shows violent crime and murder rates in cities like Laredo and Rio Grande City are far lower than the national average” (August 22, 2025). He also directed readers to further coverage by stating, “Read more in @TBBusiness. https://t.co/wCowb24bHT” (August 22, 2025).

Later that day, Cuellar shared news about a local business event: “My Laredo Outreach Coordinator, Andres Velazquez, recently joined Mai Matcha Café for their grand opening celebration, where he presented the owner with a Congressional Recognition on my behalf. Mai Matcha Café brings a refreshing new take on traditional Japanese matcha tea,” (August 22, 2025).

Henry Cuellar has maintained his seat through multiple election cycles. In the most recent general election of 2024, he defeated Jay Furman with 52.8% of the vote to Furman’s 47.2%. Previous victories include defeating Cassy Garcia in 2022 with a margin of nearly thirteen points and winning against Sandra Whitten in 2020 by over nineteen points. These consistent wins reflect his longstanding support within his district.

The Uniform Crime Report cited by Cuellar is an annual publication from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that compiles nationwide crime statistics used by policymakers and researchers to assess public safety trends.
