Representative Henry Cuellar, serving Texas’ 28th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, recently engaged in discussions with key military and governmental figures regarding national defense and veteran affairs. Cuellar, who has been active in politics since his time in the Texas House of Representatives from 1987 to 2001, addressed several critical issues facing the country.

On May 15, 2025, Cuellar met with General Steven Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau. During their meeting, they discussed “the critical role of the National Guard in supporting our defense and emergency response efforts”. The discussion also touched upon priorities for the U.S. National Guard and emphasized ensuring transparency in any border support roles.

Later that day, Cuellar reported a meeting with Secretary of the Navy John Phelan, Admiral James Kilby, and Marine Corps General Eric Smith. He stated he heard directly about “the critical challenges confronting our Navy and Marine Corps”. The conversation focused on essential capabilities these branches bring to national security.

Additionally, Cuellar spoke with Douglas Collins during an Appropriations Committee Oversight Hearing to address veteran affairs. He raised concerns about financial strains faced by veterans while discussing “the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to support our veterans”.

Henry Cuellar was born in Laredo, Texas in 1955 and currently resides there. A Georgetown University graduate (BA) and University of Texas at Austin JD holder (1981), he replaced Ciro Rodriguez in Congress after his election victory.
