Rep. Henry Cuellar, U.S. Congressman representing Texas’s 28th district since 2005, highlighted federal funding initiatives, border policy advocacy, and higher education priorities in a series of posts on July 16 and 17, 2025.
On July 16, Cuellar emphasized the impact of federal resources on community health programs in South Texas. He wrote, “Federal funding makes a real difference in South Texas. Thanks to the $2M I secured for ROOTS Recovery Center, over 500 people in @cityoflaredo have received critical detox and mental health support. By equipping skilled and dedicated local leaders with the resources they need,”.
Later that day, Cuellar discussed border policy during an appearance on NewsNation. In his post dated July 16, he stated, “I joined @lauraingle on @NewsNation to talk about the need for a balanced border policy and the real-life consequences of recent budget cuts. I’ve long championed strong, smart border policies – even before many of my Republicans colleagues. But we must also confront the”.
On July 17, Cuellar welcomed educational leaders from Texas A&M University–Central Texas and Rice University to Washington D.C., focusing on financial aid and credit transfer issues in higher education. He posted, “It was great to welcome Loida González Utley and Justin Schilke – higher education leaders from @TAMUCT and @RiceUniversity – to the U.S. Capitol this week! We discussed expanding access to Pell Grants and improving credit transfers between institutions. I remain a strong”.
Cuellar has represented Texas’s 28th district since replacing Ciro Rodriguez in 2005 after serving in the Texas House of Representatives from 1987 to 2001. Born in Laredo in 1955, he continues to reside there today. His academic background includes degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and the University of Texas at Austin (JD).
