Rep. Henry Cuellar, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 28th district, recently shared a series of updates on his Twitter account regarding a special day in Washington, D.C., involving Santiago, a young constituent acting as “Congressman for a Day.” The tweets highlight various aspects of Santiago’s visit and experiences.
On May 8, 2025, Rep. Cuellar posted about introducing Santiago during the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense’s Army budget hearing. In his tweet, Cuellar noted: “This morning, I had the privilege of introducing Santiago, our #CongressmanForADay, during the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense’s Army budget hearing.” He further mentioned that Santiago met Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll and U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George.
Later that day, Cuellar tweeted again to share another highlight from Santiago’s visit: “After our House Appropriations hearing, @SecArmy Daniel Driscoll and @USArmy Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George presented Santiago – our #CongressmanForADay – with two rare challenge coins in recognition of his visit to the Capitol.” These coins were given as symbols of honor and tradition.
In another post from May 8th, Rep. Cuellar recommended visiting Washington D.C.’s Air and Space Museum while recounting Santiago’s experience there: “For folks visiting DC, I always recommend touring the incredible @airandspace Museum…Santiago…got to explore the history of flight and space.” This tweet emphasized how Santiago was able to learn about technological advancements in aviation and space exploration.
Henry Cuellar has been serving Texas’ 28th District since replacing Ciro Rodriguez in 2005. Born in Laredo in 1955 and holding degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, he continues to reside in Laredo while fulfilling his congressional duties.
