U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) announced that more than $1.74 million in federal funding will assist working families and seniors in Webb, Zapata and Starr counties with their energy bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A news release from Cuellar’s office said the Webb County Community Action Agency will receive $1.07 million, while $674,156 will be allocated to the South Texas Development Council as part of the Low Income Energy Assistance Program. The fund stems from the CARES Act.
“Texans should not have to choose between paying their utility bill or feeding their family during these challenging times,” Cuellar said in the release posted on his Congressional website. “This federal investment will make sure working families and seniors are able to keep their homes cool through the summer months."
Cuellar said as a senior appropriator, he is committed to funding vital programs that will support the most vulnerable in our community.
He specifically thanked Webb County Community Action Agency Executive Director Javier Ramirez, South Texas Development Council Director Juan Rodriguez, and their staffs for their work during the pandemic.
