The Laredo City Council recently approved a Homestead Exemption of $30,000 of the appraised value for property owners who also qualify for disability insurance benefits under the Federal Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance Act.

According to a news release, qualifying taxpayers will save approximately $190 in annual taxes based on the current tax rate. This exemption will become effective for the 2020 tax year and will cost the city approximately $200,000.

Taxpayers who already have a Disability Person (DP) exemption status with the city will receive the savings automatically. Taxpayers who want to apply for the exemption can find the application online and check the box for "Disabled Person."

The City of Laredo Tax Office can be reached at 956-727-6403 to answer questions about the application process.
