There were 50 Black students enrolled in Webb County schools in the 2021-22 school year, 5.7% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Webb County welcomed 59,518 students during the 2021-22 school year. Among them, Black comprised 0.1% of the student body to be the fourth least represented ethnicity in the county.

Among the 85 schools in Webb County, only Col. Santos Benavides Elementary School and United High School enrolled any Black students, welcoming seven students each in the 2021-22 school year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
