City of Laredo issued the following announcement on Oct. 12.
The Saturday, October 17, drive through event will be marked by signs around the premise, including a marked entrance and exit.
- Pull into drive way off of Daugherty, entrance & we’ll come to you! (a map is attached)
- Each participating volunteer will be asked to fill in a short registration slip; a staff member will hand this and a pen to you through the car window
- Pull up & give us your completed registration slip, and receive your clean up kit (small paper bag)
- Exit out onto Thomas Avenue, and off you go to clean!
This a first of its kind event for KLB and we continue to promote with schools and organizations across Laredo. The first step to participate, is to get a FREE clean-up kit in a drive through or curbside pick-up process. Step two, through social media, we ask participating volunteers to self-report by posting video and photos of their litter pickup activity using the hashtag #KLBSafeandSolo; And finally, once they fill out an electronic litter survey, KLB awards them community service hours credit via email or snail mail.
By designing the various components to the event and carrying it out in this manner, KLB is taking everyone’s safety and wellness into account. Organizers are cognizant that a stay-at-home emergency order is in effect and COVID 19 operating parameters prohibit group gatherings. In a small, informal survey about a possible KLB service event to gauge volunteer sentiment, the results were decisive. Out of 164 respondents to the survey the majority definitely show interest in KLB volunteer events at 94%. And 93% of the respondents state that they would be willing to participate in a cleanup project that promotes social distancing.
Therefore, KLB emphasizes & prioritizes personal safety through this event that allows individuals or family groups to participate over an extended period of time, approximately 7 weeks. Literature contained within the cleanup kit discusses social distancing, and includes masks, gloves, trash bags and other literature promoting safe practices for solo-litter collection, and safe disposal of all PPE (personal protective equipment.)
Potential volunteers that may not be able to attend this Saturday’s distribution event, are encouraged to stop by the Environmental Services Department any regular weekday, Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5PM. The FREE Cleanup kits will be available while supplies last. If picking up curbside at the office the last day to pick up a kit is Friday, November 6, 2020.
Anyone that may need help with the process, or have questions about the distribution of cleanup kits, please contact KLB directly at 956-794-1650 or keeplaredobeautiful@ci.laredo.tx.us. KLB’s Facebook page will have all the information as well @KeepLaredoBeautiful.
